8a General Services Administration Contractor
GSA 8a Minority owned company is the word used for socially or economically deprived corporations which have plowed through approval procedure with the GSA and been granted a General Services Administration schedule. Once 8a certification has finished, the 8a small business is then capable of make the most of a variety of business contracts which the federal contracting officer has mandated can solely be fulfilled by 8a entities. These mandated contracts are known as a small business set-aside.
Small Business Entities v. 8a Companies
An 8a Enterpriseis a small business that has confirmed to the Federal Government it is socially or economically disadvantaged. A small United States' enterprise (whether or not socially or economically deprived) can acquire a General Services Administration contract and be eligible for small business set-asides. These set asides make it more feasible for the small business to vie with much bigger businesses. In lots of occurrences, a larger enterprise is awarded a schedule with the provision that it will hire GSA licensed small entities to meet sections of the contract. These bigger company schedules are then reviewed intently by the GSA to make sure of compliance with the small enterprise requirement.
The element that makes an 8a Certified small enterprise different from a non 8a Licensed small business is the further motivation for more established companies to hire 8a Qualified small enterprise to satisfy federal government requirments. What it boils all the way down to is that small businesses competing with each other for a specific gsa schedule and the other is 8a Licensed and the other isn't, the 8a Licensed enterprise will more than likely get the contract all other things being the same.
8a Certification Method
The process for acquiring an 8a Contract will be tedious if not carried out correctly from the beginning. One cause for this is the way in which the federal officer works. Akin to other enterprise, the federal officer would rather deal with people who find themselves conversant in certification procedures than with individuals they are going to need to baby sit every step of the way. I've previously written about a client who went through the process of acquiring a GSA contract on its own. It took 10 months for them to obtain their contract award. This process could and should have been significantly quicker if they had retained someone intimately aware of the procdure from the outset.
