Being The Only Woman On The Team
I am an IT Networking expert. I received into this field about 8 many years ago, when I was attempting to upgrade my ability-set to enhance my chances of obtaining a job following the IT crash of 2000. I enrolled in a Cisco Networking certification program and was 1 of the 3 women in the entire course of 30. By the time the program ended, I was the only lady still left in the team.
That did not bother me. Im used to that. In college, in the early 90s, I was 1 of the ten women in our Electronics/Pc Sc. batch of 70+. tory burch wallet Then I was 1 of 3 in a batch of 24 during Grad school.
It has remained that way even following I started working. On my current job, I am the only lady in my group. I meet a great deal of ladies who are in Software Improvement but am but to meet a lady who is in IT/Networking support and administration. I am utilized to things being this way and never gave it a second believed.
There have been stray feedback from ććŖć¼ćć¼ć ććć° people, from time to time, that have produced me surprise if anybody Should be shocked by that. The initial time was when I had been hired for a temporary weekend project that concerned shifting all gear from one flooring of a financial institution to another in the same developing. The recruiter had hired about 70 support specialists for the venture and I was one of them. I was supposed to report for work tory burch flip flops at five pm on a Friday. When I did, the venture leader stopped talking and the entire space fell silent for a couple of seconds I was the only lady on that whole group!
It should say some thing for my self-esteem because that did not faze me at all and it was business as usual for me during the rest of the project. But later on that evening one of the technicians requested me if it bothered me at all to be the only lady in the entire team. I told him that it didnt and, after all these many years (7.5 to be exact) nonetheless havent been in a position to figure out why it ought to have.
The 2nd incident that comes to my mind was when I was operating as the network administrator at my previous task. It was a small business so I also carried out the duties of user and desktop support and as soon as, while assisting a consumer resolve an issue, I experienced to call the tech support of another company. After I experienced recognized myself and gave him the reason I was calling, the first phrases out of the agents mouth had been Are you really a community administrator? Are there really ladies in your area? I was shocked by the question, to say the least.
I imply, yes there arent many of us out there but you CAN discover us in most professions on this earth even in community administration! I am shocked there arent Much more of us but that is a rant for another day. It strikes me as peculiar if, in todays day and age, someone expresses wonder at viewing a lady working in a area that has typically been regarded as a mans arena. It is also sad simply because this perspective trickles down to impact impressionable women like my daughters who think it is odd for a woman to be in a field that is usually populated by men only. I have to function truly hard to make my daughters realize that it is alright to be the only one in any scenario when you are assured of your self.
In my present team I have sometimes experienced to struggle to prove that I can also do what the men can specially when it entails carrying containers of equipment. I nearly had to battle childishly to be allowed to carry servers on a place that we briefly moved to, last 12 months. Fortunately, my coworkers grew used to it after an preliminary period of uneasiness watching me carry hefty boxes and gear correct beside them. I like it when, even now, 1 of them rushes to open the door for me as I head out with four laptop computer boxes well balanced in my hands Id do the same for them.
Being the only woman on the group has, ććŖć¼ćć¼ć ćµć³ćć« so far, been a bland expertise for me. I mean, there are no men falling over on their own to impress me. I dont get brownie factors just for being a woman whos trying to do a mans job. (For the file, I am not. I am performing MY task a task that I am fully certified for and was employed to do) I appreciate working with the men I work with now. We get alongside nicely, we can give the rowdiest crowd a run for its money when we are in the mood for it, we battle, we make up, we assist every other and we make a excellent team.
Have you ever labored in a team/profession where you had been the only woman, or one of the very couple of? How did you deal with it? Did tory burch outlet you appreciate it or did it make you self-conscious?
