 Can you really upgrade on SIM only contracts?

Please excuse me if any one has already helped with this post any place else, but I haven't used a discussion forum for a year. I’ve had a SIM only plan with my mobile for a long time now, however my smartphone is beginning to look battered and so I would prefer to update to a smartphone if at all possible. I'm wondering if any one may perhaps advise me how you can do this, and exactly how much it could possibly cost you to upgrade. I'm not sure that you can up-grade on a a Sim only contract, maybe you only have to pay out a lot more a month ? If any body has found out it'll be fab if you could let me know.
